| 内容記述 | This paper presents a conceptual semantic account of various aspectual interpretations of the Japanese V1+V2 compound verb V-dasu. In addition to the inception of single event and a multiple event readings observed in the past literature, I argue that V-dasu also means an inception of plural period repetition reading and one of single period repetition reading. The single event reading is observed in cases in which V1 is inherently atelic. Other three interpretations are forced when V1 event is telic. I claim that dasu can be represented by a set of aspectual functions and demonstrate how these four interpretations are derived by the principles of semantic computation on the conceptual structures within the framework proposed by Jackndoff (1991, 1996). I argue that aspectual features of V1 event must be compatible with constraints on an application of the functions that constitute the meaning of dasu. If V1 events are atelic, the functions of which the meaning of dasu consists are directly applicable to the conceptual structure of Vt. On the other hand, if V1 events are telic, the entire meaning of V-dasu is forced to be a multiple event reading by an application of a function that denotes plurality. This function is introduced by lexical elements such as an adverbial modifier mainichi or an application of "rule of construal" (Jakendoff 1991). This explains the fact that the telicity of V1 plays a central role in determining the meanings of V-dasu. | |||||
