内容記述 | This paper aims to identify certain patterns in the sequence of sentence-final ellipsis (IISASHI) and interruption (WARIKOMI) in interviews with native Japanese speakers. IISASHI is the act of discontinuance of talking in which a speaker is interrupted by another's utterance and stops talking in the middle of a sentence, yielding ellipses, and WARIKOMI is the act of interrupting in the middle of a sentence by starting to talk. IISASHIs caused by WARIKOMIs were selected out of 2,905 IISASHI turns found in 85 ACTFL-OPI-type interviews with native Japanese speakers. Then, 6 distinct sequence patterns were identified by analyzing the function of the sequences and categorizing them by their similarity. The various functions, which the sequences play, include changing topics, supporting topics, giving opinions, fostering communications, emphasizing speaker's opinions, a shortened form of questioning with simplified phrases, replying, assisting, making corrections, etc. In interpersonal communication, WARIKOMI is found to be not always offensive, but an assertive action in which listeners assert themselves while showing respect for others' opinions. And it was revealed that there are linguistic rules, such as fillers and other expressions, for assertive actions to be smoothly carried out. Moreover, IISASHI yields ellipses after the sentence's discontinuance, but in many cases, the interrupting person, who performs WARIKOMI, interrupts after he gets enough information to comprehend the point and doesn't execute SASSHI, the comprehending the words not spoken. However, when SASSHI is conducted, it is not always conducted by listeners, but by both listeners and speakers. | |||||
