| 内容記述 | In this article, I will briefly discuss the reinvention of the samurai and of the merchants, which began in the Tokugawa and then extended into the Meiji period; my assumption is that both samurai and merchants played a crucial part in he advent of modernity in Japan, and that the thoroughness of the process through which they were reinvented is accounted for by developments from pre-modern (“post-historical”) Japan. |
