The familiarity and complexity in test materials were controlled to examine the involvement of pronunciation and meaning of kanji for each task. Participants were shown kanji cards in succession and asked to give the pronunciation and meaning of the target kanji. In addition, they were asked to explain everything they knew about each of the target characters (task 1). Then they reported their use of strategies of kanji recognition(task 2). Their strategy reports were analyzed and categorized into memory strategies, cognitive strategies and compensation strategies. The result from task 1 indicated that English-speaking learners of Japanese use information from both context and knowledge of vocabulary to recognize kanji words. In addition above, the results from task 2 showed that (1) when the context was given, they used contextual information in addition to the information based on the analysis of the kanji and/or the kanji-word ; (2)when the task was difficult, they relied on intra-kanji/kanji-word information extensively ; and (3) regardless of task condition, they also used general knowledge based on their experiences in Japan.}, pages = {67--85}, title = {日本語学習者の漢字認識ストラテジー : 英語母語話者の場合}, volume = {10}, year = {2004} }
