| 内容記述 | Japanese and international students at a graduate school of science and technology are expected to work together to complete their research activities. However, their native and nonnative status of Japanese can make them unequal in the process of communication, which may affect their research activities. In order to compensate for the lack of Japanese ability of the international students, both Japanese and international students use code-switching from Japanese into English in their communication. This paper analyzed their code-switching in group discussions and examined how the use of English influenced their way to participate in communication, and their relationships. The results show that code-switching changes their relationships from native-nonnative speakers of Japanese, to nonnative speakers of English, and also "Japanese-English speakers." These roles help them to be equal in terms of language use and participate more equally in the discussions. As they continue to communicate with each other with these changes, they create their own communication style, which helps to enhance their rapport. This active communication where they use their own styles and balance their relationships will supports their research activities at graduate school. | |||||
