International tourism has been a major source of cross-cultural contacts. The relationships between tourists and host communities show the complexity of modern tourism. In "culture tourism, " ethnicity, cultural identities, nationalism, traditions, and heritage are the attractions, and their presentation tends to be staged by various outside parties, notably the tourism industry. This approach to the presentation of culture can lead to disputes with local people. However, in a new type of tourism called "alternative tourism, " host communities try to present themselves to tourists by themselves.
